The following koromatua whanau are recognized as some of the principal family groupings of Ngati Rangiteaorere:
Verification Process
The verification process is reasonably straightforward. It involves referral of all new registrant applications to the Koromatua committee. Applicants who whakapapa to Rangiteaorere and are current shareholders in any of the taonga trusts will be processed automatically.
Other applicants with no land interests who claim whakapapa links will have their application carefully considered by the Koromatua Council. In the event there is a problem or a challenge to registration then the applicant will be notified and asked to attend the next Koromatua Council meeting with their whanau. If this next stage of the process fails to achieve a decision by consensus, then a vote will be cast amongst the full Koromatua Council. An applicant must achieve support for membership from at least 50% of the votes cast by the Koromatua Council. The Koromatua decision shall be final.
Is membership of Ngati Rangiteaorere limited only to those who whakapapa to Ngati Rangiteaorere?
Answer, yes, except in the rarest of circumstances. The Koromatua Council holds the discretion to grant speaking rights and full membership rights (including the right to vote) to persons whose membership is awarded on the basis of their contributions and past work for the benefit of the tribe (e.g. Mrs Riria Atutahi, Mr Lou Farrell - full voting / speaking rights). This discretion has been exercised on only the most rarest of occasions.
